How to Play The Travels of Marco

The Travels of Marco is an adventure board game for two to four players, taking about two hours to play. In the game, players take on the role of Marco Polo and his companions as they travel through Asia, visiting cities and collecting treasures. The goal of the game is to be the first player to return to Venice with ten treasures.

To begin, each player selects a character tile and places it in front of them. The characters have different abilities which will come into play during the game. Next, players place their pawns on Venice on the map. The map is made up of five regions: Asia, the Middle East, India, China, and Japan.

The game is played over eight rounds, with each round consisting of four phases:

1) Movement phase: In this phase, players move their pawns around the map according to the rules on the board. They can move one space at a time or two spaces if they are carrying a treasure. If they are stopped by another player's pawn or a barrier on the board, they must either forfeit their turn or pay a toll equal to the number of spaces they moved.

2) City phase: In this phase, players visit cities and collect treasures. Each city has different rewards depending on the player's character tile. For example, traders get a bonus for visiting cities with markets while explorers get a bonus for visiting cities with landmarks. When a player visits a city, they take one treasure from that city and place it in front of them. If there are no more treasures in that city, they take nothing.

3) Travel phase: In this phase, players can choose to either stay in their current city or travel to another one. To travel to another city, they must pay the cost shown on the map. This cost can be paid by either taking treasures from players who are already in that city or by paying cash out-of-pocket. If a player chooses not to travel but stay put in their current city instead, they gain an extra action that they can use in later phases (more on this later).

4) Action phase: In this phase, players can use their extra action from staying put or from travelling earlier to do things like trade goods with other players or draw new cards from the deck.

After all eight rounds have been played, final scoring takes place. Players add up all the treasures they've collected and whoever has ten or more wins!
